  • What is a DXF file?

A DXF file is a vector file short for Digital Interchange Format or Digital Exchange Format. The DXF file format is used for 2D and 3D drawings during the product design process. Just like a photo uses a .jpeg or a word document uses a .doc or .docx extension filename, our CAD software requires files to have a .dxf extension filename. Hence why we cannot use a photo or a screenshot of something a client provides us. We need to be given a DXF file.

Having a DXF file makes the design process simplified at our end and that is why we often request this from clients. Without a DXF file, designs must be created from scratch, and this often takes many hours which ends up becoming costly for the client.

For many businesses who don’t give us a DXF file, we are able to create your design e.g., your business logo using our CAD software. Once we create your design, we can then save this as a DXF file which then makes future projects for businesses quicker as we do not need to recreate the design again, unless the business wants to make changes.

For clients who want a custom-made laser cut product, e.g., wall art, bar signs, fire pits just to name a few, we have a range of pre-designed files to choose from. We also have a range of ‘ready to purchase’ products. Click here to Shop Our Range.

For more complex designs, or for anything that we do not have on file, for example, a picture of your beloved pet that you may want on your pet’s tombstone, please provide a DXF file, rather than a photo of your pet.

The best way to do this is to use Google. Simply type ‘DXF’ after your search word. You’ll be amazed at what you can find. Once you have chosen your design, please email us the URL link when you make your enquiry so that we can check to see if your design will work. This is because, some designs don’t turn out well once it has been laser cut. If there are too many cut outs, the finished product won’t look as good as you hoped for. Therefore, it is essential that you check with us first so that we can provide professional advice on whether the design will work when laser cut.

  • What materials do you use?

Our most widely used materials are aluminium, stainless steel and mild steel.

  • Can I supply my own materials?

The short answer is ‘Yes’. However, please check with us first as there are a few things we may need to consider before you bring in your own materials. Send us your enquiry via our ‘Contact Us’ page.

  • What is your ‘quoting’ process for laser cutting projects?

When we quote laser cutting projects, it’s vital that we consider a variety of factors from the beginning stages to the final stages of manufacturing.

Often, clients think that the only cost involved in quoting are materials and labour and often underestimate the final quote.

Here are some of the factors we consider when putting together quotes for customers:

    1. Design Time

One of the longest stages of a project can be design time. We need to consider the complexities of the design and whether the machine will produce a quality finish for that design. To keep costs down, we often request the client to provide a DXF file of their design. (Please refer to FAQ "What is a DXF file?")

    2. Material Costs

While this seems obvious, what most people don’t know is that materials are never a fixed price. Material costs fluctuate based on how the market is responding to production costs e.g., mining and processing, energy an the overall economy.

    3. Laser Cutting Time

For every project, we can calculate the time it takes for the machine to do the work. The industry standard is to charge per minute the machine is in use.

    4. Post Processing

Post processing includes the work required for project completion. E.g., additional fabrication work, welding, sanding, blasting, bending, powder coating, etc. This all takes extra time.

    5. Other Project Complexities

Each project is unique. Laser cutting experts will factor in their quote any other complexities that are required to bring the project to life. Things like installation, delivery, volume, machine requirements and so on.

  • "Why can't I get an on-the-spot quote?"

99% of our jobs are custom made, meaning, they are made to a customer’s unique specifications.

While it would be awesome to give you a quote there and then, we need to consider some factors for YOUR custom project.

    These include:

     1. Design Time

     2. Material Costs

     3. Machine Time

     4. Consumables

     5. Post Processing

     6. Other Project Intricacies

This takes time. We aim to get you a quote within 12-24 hours (Business Days).

  • How efficient is laser cutting?

Laser cutting is considered to be extremely accurate.

It is faster and more precise than traditional sheet-metal cutting techniques.

The process leverages a computer-operated program to carefully cut materials within an acceptable accuracy range.

    Minimal wastage!

And it is SAFER & environmentally friendlier!
